Whisper of the heart (1995)

“What if I look inside myself and I don’t find any gems?”

—— Whisper of the heart 1995

I had an studio Ghibli marathon last month and watch this movie because of The Cat Returns.

It is a very light yet heart warming movie, it doesn’t have a dramatic plot, however it have a very fuzzy warm feelings that makes you want to go following your goal. It is a slow and simple movie, unlike Spirited Away or Howl’s moving castle, you might be disappointed if you were expecting some fantasy movie.

The movie is fascinating to me cause how simple it is. You can see yourself through the main character, and relate to heir struggle and worries. If you were a nerdy geeky person like me, you might find yourself just like Shizuku Tsukishima, who always stayed in the library.

The movie is more about the uncertainty of ambition of teenagers, and their frustration of their future. The movie can conjure up emotions from the viewers. It really gets me when Shizuku asked “What if I look inside myself and I don’t find any gems?”.

This question still haunted me even I’ve graduated from school and working. If you asked me about it years ago, I will be irritated and frustrated about the urge of wanting to find my own talent. Now thinking back about it, if you are in the phase of getting lost about your future, I’d recommend you to slow down.

You don’t need to rush, and you don’t need to limit yourself. You don’t have to study something you don’t like just because you are “good” at it. And you don’t need to push yourself doing something like finish university at age 20 just because everyone does that. Let yourself listen to your body and your heart is what more important than finding the “gem’.

If you are on your way to find your gem right now just like Shizuku, I wish you luck :)
